The 2022 Vote That Made Our Nights Louder

July 24, 20261 min read

Wondering why loud garbage trucks are suddenly allowed to wake you up in the middle of the night?

We all rely on efficient waste collection, but a policy change at City Hall prioritized private commercial operations over our restorative sleep. The rules were changed to allow these heavy trucks to bypass standard noise prohibitions, leaving residents to bear the burden of the disruption.

In July 2022, City Council adopted an amendment (Item 2022.EC31.4) that specifically directed the city to provide an exemption from the loading and unloading noise bylaws for private commercial waste collection. By grouping private waste collection under the same category as essential "government work," the city legally permitted these companies to run their trucks more and collect waste during the night.

We learned in a recent committee meeting that the request for this exemption was not made by the city, it came up through Council. So this smells a bit fishy.
