The "Citizen Safety" Loophole Keeping You Awake
Is a crashing garbage truck at 4 AM really keeping our citizens safe?
When the push was made to allow private commercial waste collection to operate during prohibited nighttime hours, the move was presented to City Council as a matter of safety. However, trading daytime traffic logistics for severe nighttime sleep disruption creates a massive, city-wide public health hazard.
The official 2022 City Council amendment explicitly states that the noise exemption for private commercial waste collection was being provided "for citizen safety". While reducing daytime heavy truck traffic might seem safer on the surface, we know that noise is the second-largest environmental health risk in urban areas. Allowing these trucks to legally emit disturbing noises while the city sleeps is sacrificing our long-term health under the guise of safety.
