Is It Time to Ban Fireworks?

July 03, 20261 min read

While many were disappointed that for many places this year's Canada Day fireworks were delayed or canceled due to the heat, for others, it was a sigh of relief.

Fireworks have been a part of our celebrations for decades, but given what we know now, it’s time to rethink them. Their impact travels much further than the eye can see:

  • Human Trauma: The unpredictable bangs and pops can trigger severe anxiety for veterans, trauma survivors, and newcomers who have fled conflict zones.

  • Pets & Anxiety: While official city shows can be planned around, random neighborhood fireworks let off at all hours are impossible for pet owners to defend against.

  • Wildlife & Environment: Summer fireworks scare nesting birds away from their young and disrupt peak migration periods. Furthermore, the toxic chemical residue falls directly into our local waterways, poisoning fish and our water supply.

Take Action: Join the Campaign to Phase Out Fireworks in Canada

We have launched a long-term advocacy campaign on our website to shift toward safer, eco-friendly alternatives, for example drone or laser light shows, that don't involve explosives harming everything within earshot.

We want to make it as easy as possible for you to demand change from your elected officials.
