Let’s Get Acquainted: Meet Dr. Tor Oiamo, Advisor – Exposure and Health
The initial spark that ignited the creation of No More Noise happened while watching Dr. Tor Oiamo give a presentation on the health impacts of urban traffic noise. When he remarked, "we don't know enough about noise at the bedroom window," it was an instant "aha!" moment for our mission.
That single data gap clarified our entire mandate. The scientific evidence is clear: sleep deprivation caused by urban noise isn't a mere annoyance. It is a legitimate public health crisis.
Now, we are delighted to officially introduce Dr. Oiamo as a core member of our leadership team, serving as our Advisor for Exposure and Health.
Bringing Academic Expertise to the Team
Dr. Oiamo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Toronto Metropolitan University. His research focuses on understanding exactly how rapid urban changes impact long-term human health.
His specialized work includes:
Exposure Assessment: Analyzing how and where people encounter environmental stressors in their daily lives.
Environmental Noise Modeling: Mapping out how sound waves travel through complex city environments.
Air Quality Modeling: Studying the overlapping health impacts of traffic emissions and noise pollution.
Our health data and acoustical models continuously show that the current gap in public policy requires constructive, collaborative solutions. As Dr. Oiamo notes:
“The necessity of your work is underscored by the current deficit in public policy. Noise needs to be put on the agenda... Reducing noise pollution must become a top priority for a truly liveable city.”
Bridging the Gap Between Residents and City Hall
By integrating Dr. Oiamo’s academic expertise, No More Noise is perfectly positioned to act as a data-driven bridge between local residents and City Hall. We are very grateful for Dr. Oiamo’s ongoing support and collaboration as we work together to restore urban calm and protect the long-term well-being of our community.
