A New Solution: Stand-Alone Noise Meters

June 26, 20261 min read

We are a process and data oriented organization so evaluating the enforcement processes is part of the gig. The current enforcement process leaves significant gaps. By relying on delayed, in-person measurements, the city frequently misses the peak decibel levels of erratic noise disturbances. We are advocating for other solutions, such as stand alone meters and continuous sound level monitoring in documented problem areas.

We are happy to say that due to our consistent pressure the City is opening up to change. Leo Butko, the Supervisor of the Noise Team at the City of Toronto is testing out new equipment to improve the resident outcomes and experience and reduce noise.

Here is how the new process works:

  • The City of Toronto is now officially testing stand-alone noise meters designed specifically to capture environmental noise in problem areas.

  • These advanced devices can continuously monitor sound levels over extended 36 to 48-hour periods, ensuring that unpredictable disturbances are accurately documented.

  • This technological integration aims to eliminate the logistical burden of multiple, poorly-timed bylaw officer visits, creating a more efficient system for both the city and its residents.

This is an exact demonstration of how professional advocacy can lead to tangible, structural improvements. By actively working as a bridge between the community and municipal enforcement teams, we are helping to modernize how our city handles noise pollution.

Your donations help No More Noise continue advocating for better noise enforcement, improved data collection, and practical tools like stand-alone noise meters that can support healthier, quieter communities.
